Ryder Cup 2027: Jim Furyk Calls Team USA 'Underdogs' at Adare Manor
More than three decades without a road win, a captain promising change and a LIV shake-up that could reshape both teams.
Team USA's road problem is well known, and its captain is not hiding from it. Jim Furyk says the Americans will be "underdogs" at the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland, where they will try to end more than 30 years without a win on European soil.
Furyk Returns to Europe
This is familiar territory for Furyk. He also captained Team USA in 2018 in Paris, when Europe won comfortably. Now he returns to Europe insisting that changes are coming to how the American team prepares.
Calling your own team the underdog is partly strategy and partly honesty. Europe has dominated at home for decades, with passionate crowds and course setups that suit their players.
Why the U.S. Struggles in Europe
- Hostile crowds that energize the European team.
- Course setup decisions made by the home side.
- Team chemistry, which Europe has built into a tradition across generations.
The LIV Factor
The Ryder Cup picture is also being shaped by the turmoil at LIV Golf. The DP World Tour has reportedly decided not to allow players still competing in LIV Golf's new version to join its tournaments in 2027, which would prevent them from earning European Ryder Cup eligibility.
That matters because LIV is in the middle of an exodus. Ian Poulter, Tyrrell Hatton, Jon Rahm, Louis Oosthuizen and others have walked away from LIV 2.0 as the league works through bankruptcy. Players who leave could restore their paths to Europe's team. Read our full breakdown of the LIV Golf exodus.
What It Means for Both Teams
- Europe could get some big names back on its eligibility list if LIV players return to the DP World Tour.
- Team USA needs its best players fully committed to a new approach if Furyk's promised changes are going to work.
